Computer Cases

Is your computer’s case or housing of any importance to you? You might be asking yourself the question: why should it be? The fact is that the computer case is vital to the computer itself and also to some people.

Let’s start with the computer’s point of view. One, if not the main causes of computer malfunction is too much heat. Which is why, when computers were first used in factories and large offices, the specialized computer room was cut off from dust and was air conditioned, if not cooled specially. In those days, thirty-forty years ago, computer parts were very fragile and extremely costly.

Nowadays, they are very, very much less expensive but they are still subject to jip from heat. Extreme heat will twist the boards, especially the motherboard because it is large, inside the computer case. They are not made for these gymnastics and sooner or later the very thin connections soldered onto the surface of the board will fracture and prevent the flow of electricity. It will die.

In order to prevent this happening, producers put fans inside the computer in order to boost the flow of air. There are normally at least two in a desktop computer case, one built-in to the external casing and one directly on the CPU (the chip), which is often the hottest and most expensive single component. In laptops, where air circulation is even more restricted, there may be three or four fans.

So, these fans increase the circulation of air within the case in an attempt to cool the chip’s surroundings down. Therefore, it also stands to reason that there must be sufficient space for that air to circulate. If it was left up to the computer to design itself, computer cases would be larger and with more fans. A little like you might like to live in a larger house with air conditioning, if money was no object.

Now from the human’s point of view. People agonize more about looks and fashion and about how much space the computer is taking up. Producers have to pay attention to what people would like if they want to sell their computers. People wanted less prominent computer cases, so manufacturers made half-size cases; people wanted quieter computers, so manufacturers put fewer fans in the cases. And the result was predictable: computers housed in cases like these broke down more often and the only person who was happy about that was the manufacturer.

There is also a trend towards aesthetics in computer cases. Acrylic, see-through cases are very trendy with gamers. Now games machines are some of the most powerful home computers on the market, because of the power needed to run the graphics at a life-like speed.

See-through cases promote the use of size and fans, because they are often themed, which means that the interior may have green, blue, yellow or red LED’s to light it up. So, for instance, when the DVD player kicks in a red LED comes on inside the case. Similarly with fans, which may also be painted. Some of these themed computer cases are perfect for the chips that live in them and the people that own them.

When buying computer component or electronics online I am always amazed at how much prices can differ from one computer store to the next. This can be down to many factors of course.

Certain computer distributors have better deals with computer manufacturers and as such have a lot stronger buying power than others. This is reflected in the price that a distributor can offer the reseller. Also if a reseller has a range that they sell a lot of, they are in a better position to negotiate better prices with their supplier.

The important thing to remember is that it is very rare for a single computer store to have strong buying power over every single one of their product ranges so this allows for a lot of fluctuation on prices when comparing computer stores.

If you type into Google “Computer Store”, no matter what country you are in you are bound to find that at least the first five pages are taken up with computer stores offering similar products. Some are cheaper, some more expensive, some have the item you are looking for in stock and others do not. Some charge double the delivery charge of other and some offer free delivery.

Chose the Right LCD Monitor For Your Computer

When it comes to purchasing an LCD monitor for your computer, there are many brands and models to choose from. LCD monitors can be widescreen, designed with movie-watchers in mind, they can have high resolution, perfect for hardcore gamers, and many of them are energy efficient, an advantage for the environmentally conscious. In addition to special features these monitors come in a variety of sizes, too, ranging from 17 to 30 inches wide. With all of these options available, it can be a daunting task to choose a monitor for your computer. By doing a little research, however, and learning what products are available, you can drastically reduce the stress of your hunt and find the perfect LCD monitor to suit your needs.

The Samsung SyncMaster 2053BW is fairly low-priced, as far as LCD monitors go, but it is one of the top models in its size class of 20 inches. Also rated as one of the best monitors for general purpose, the SyncMaster has great color and picture with a 1680×1050 resolution. Selling for between $200 and $300, it is great for either the home or the office.

Available for $399, the HP LP2275w is slightly more expensive than its Gateway competitor the HD 2201 but experts say it is far superior in color reproduction and performance. With a 2-inch thick panel, the LP2275 offers a 1680×1050 resolution and a 20-inch screen. This HP monitor sports various connections such as DVI and Display Port but does not include an HDMI port, which some consumers consider to be its only major drawback.

Moving up in quality and price, the Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP offers a 24-inch flat panel display which is perfect for graphics and photo editing for close to $600. With a resolution of 1920×1200 pixels, the UltraSharp is the monitor with the highest picture quality, excluding professional monitors. The screen itself rotates 45 degrees to either side and 30 degrees back and offers many connection options including VGA, DVI, HDMI, and USB, making it a rather versatile LCD monitor.

The Dell Crystal has been referred to as the “supermodel” of computer monitors due to its fashionable design. Composed of a slim LCD monitor and four speakers embedded in a sheet of glass 4mm thick, the Crystal is a limited edition model available for over $1000. For such an expensive monitor, some reviewers feel its features are lacking. With a 1680×1050 resolution, the Dell Crystal offers the same performance level as many other models which cost $800 less.

Considering the rate at which new technology is being developed, one cannot help but wonder what kind of computer monitors will become available in the coming years. The LCD monitor has already virtually replaced the CRT monitor and provides high-resolution graphics, often in a lightweight wide screen. As newer models are developed, the prices of monitors continue to fall, making them more affordable to the average computer user to utilize in his own home. No matter what model you choose, an LCD monitor will greatly enhance your computer experiences, making video clearer, game graphics sharper, and colors more brilliant.
